Christmas in the Trenches

Saturday, December 8  –  10am to 11:30am

Re-enactment of the 1914 World War I Christmas Truce

104 years ago, the soldiers in the Western Front of the Great War called unofficial ceasefires during the week of Christmas.  Enemies came together to decorate, exchange gifts, sing carols, and even play football.  Re-enactors will decorate the replica 150 yard-long trench on the museum grounds, visitors will receive a special holiday trench tour, and hear excerpts form WWI letters from soldiers experiencing Christmas in the trenches.

The event entrance and parking for the Christmas in the Trenches is off the Rec Path parking lot off Guilford Road straight, follow the event directional signs.  Purchase admission in the Main Museum Center Lobby the day of this special event.

In addition to the tour, see a narrated re-enactment of a battle and the cease fire, sing carols with the soldiers, sip hot chocolate, see real WWI artifacts, and even play football.

Preregistration and payment is required by Thursday, December 6.  Make a reservation by calling 815-397-9112.  Please note this event is outdoors and visitors will need to dress for the weather.  This event is rain or shine.
