2018 Lecture Schedule

The 1960s was a time of high consumption, experimentation and cultural change. The Connecting with History Series explores the 1960s and the impact it had on our community. We will explore
popular music, fashion and visual culture as well as John F .Kennedy and his visits to Rockford in 1959 and 1960. What were the changes taking place nationally in music, fashion and politics that impacted Rockford? Join us as local historians and experts help us relive life in Rockford fifty years ago.

The Songs They Are a-Changin’: Music of the 1960s

Sunday, February 11 • 2 pm
Speaker: Amber Bruns

It surveys Rock, Motown, and Country with artists including the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and many others.

JFK, Rockford, and The Nation
Sunday, February 25 • 2 pm
Speaker: Dr. Catherine Forslund of Rockford University

Dr. Forslund will talk about the times JFK visited Rockford and the impact
his administration had on our City.

The Visual Culture of the 1960s

Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Langworthy, of Rockford University

Dr. Langworthy will look at the fashion of the 1960s and its broader artistic and cultural context.
