CROSSROADS TO HOST BLACK HISTORY MONTH BLUES PROGRAM (March 17)

The Crossroads Blues Society will kick off its Black History Month Blues in the Schools Program February 11 at East High School, 2929 Charles Street.

Local musician and educator Dan Phelps will work with music students from East and Guilford High Schools starting at 1:55 for the last two periods of the day and then will spend two weeks teaching songwriting and guitar.  English honors students from East will write lyrics based on “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and learn how to put the lyrics to music.

The English and music students, after the 2 week residency, will work together to create videos, which will be shown at 6:30 pm, March 17 at the East theater and auditorium.

Student Art Sought for Showcase (April 8)

The Sister Cities Association of Belvidere is looking for student artwork for the 28th Annual Young Artists Showcase.  Students in Boone County ages 13 to 18 are eligible to enter.  The theme is “Peace Through People.”

Entries should be taken between 3 pm and 5 pm April 8 to Alpine Bank, 600 S. State Street, Belvidere.  Following judging on April 12, the artwork will be displayed to the public on the lower level of the bank for one week, then relocated to the Brick Café & Art Gallery, 615 S. State Street.

A reception and awards ceremony will take place at 9:30 am April 16 at the bank.  The winners’ work will be sent to Sister Cities International in Washington, DC and be judged on an international level.  Belvidere has two sister cities in Germany and France.
